Decorating spare rooms can sometimes be a challenge. When we moved into our current home last year we were thrilled to have extra room for guests. At the time, all we had was a mattress and some random mismatched bedding. Because this room isn’t used daily, it often became the catch all room. Every time I walked past the room it bothered me.
Not only did the walls and ceiling need a fresh coat of paint, but the overall feeling in the room felt uninviting. The lack of furniture and the old quilt just weren’t what I envisioned for the space. Because this room is only used occasionally, I was on the hunt for affordable decorating solutions that fit the budget and worked with the style and direction I wanted to take the room while providing maximum comfort for our guests.
When I found this tufted headboard from Better Homes and Gardens sold exclusively at Walmart, I fell in love! It wasn’t carried in my store locally but I found it online and knew it was exactly what I was looking for.
Not only did I love this headboard because of its beauty, but the price fit with my makeover budget and left room for nightstands and added accessories. I knew I wanted to go with a modern farmhouse feel so I used the headboard as a springboard for the room design. I shopped around my home and found some older unused items and thrift store finds that I wanted to add. I also headed to Walmart.com and bought a few more items from Better Homes and Gardens exclusively at Walmart to finish off the room design.
While I was waiting for my goodies to arrive in the mail, I pulled out the drop cloths and a gallon of paint and got busy! I freshened up the ceiling with Ceiling White paint from Sherwin Williams and added two coats of Alabaster by SW to the walls. It felt so good to get rid of the yellow and welcome in a more modern bright color.
When my furniture arrived, I easily assembled the headboard and nightstands in one afternoon and couldn’t wait to put the room together. I was super impressed with the quality of the Falls Creek weathered nightstands and love the added storage capabilities. Not only can guests keep items in the drawers, but adding in a galvanized bin and/or baskets provides additional storage. Keeping extra toiletries on hand using this basket was the perfect place to keep them accessible if needed.
One of my most favorite finds was the oil rubbed bronze finish lamps! I found these in store and online and they made the perfect addition to the room stacked on vintage books from the thrift store. Mixing old and new accessories and furniture together adds such a fun touch. This room also gets a lot of light, so I wanted to add some curtains to the windows to help block the light and keep the room cooler when guests were staying in the summer. I fell in love with the pretty indigo and aqua blue tones on these damask curtain panels.
To freshen up the bedding and keep with the farmhouse style, I ordered this pretty white ruched 3 piece bedding set and added the block medallion embroidered pillow and indigo damask throw for soft compliments of blue. (The throw is only $7.05! Can you even believe that?) Creating a beautifully designed and affordable room has never been more attainable.
The addition of the acacia wood tray is a fun way to display fresh flowers and clean washcloths for our guests.
For the walls, I added this galvanized finish clock and repurposed an old sign from my daughters nursery to create the DIY Feather Wall Art.
On the opposite wall I added a vintage chair with an old apple bucket filled with fresh towels.
And the final touch to the room comes with of course…chocolate! You can be certain that when you come to stay at our house you will always have a full supply of chocolate at your fingertips. ๐
