We moved into our house a few months ago and are finally getting settled in and it feels so good. Today we are sharing some photos of our Sitting Room Update (dining room). We knew when we purchased our home that we would be painting the entire main floor. It wasn’t horrible, but it was a very yellow color on all the walls and ceilings. Even though the paint wasn’t dark it seemed to create a weird yellow color cast on everything. The doors and trim just seemed dingy looking and even though the home is only 7 years old it felt very dated. After trying out several paint samples I decided to go with a warm white for our sitting (eventually dining) room walls and a flat white for the ceiling.
We are still in process with this room so this is more of a before and during photo. We plan to add board and batten eventually, new flooring, chunky baseboards, crown molding, and of course a large dining room table. Even though this is actually our dining room, we are using it just as a sitting room for now. I forgot to take photos before I started taping everything off but this will give you an idea. Let’s check out some lovely before photos:
Now with some white ceilings, I can’t believe what a difference it makes! My biggest tip when completing a diy painting project is to use quality brushes and rollers. I only use Purdy products and was so excited when they offered to send me a few new brushes and rollers to complete the many painting projects in our new home.
From experience I’ve realized that if you invest in quality products and take care cleaning them you won’t have to replace them often at all.
We chose the color Neutral Ground from Sherwin Williams. It is a soft warm neutral white.
Stay tuned for more fun updates!

Your sitting room is very nice. Thanks for mentioning the paint color. Trying to decide if I should use Neutral Ground in my downstairs. Most of the downstairs is now SW Believable Buff 6120 and some Whole Wheat SW 6121. I have Bruce hardwood floors in Gunstock and cherry furniture in the dinning room

Hi! I just stumbled on your site while searching for images of rooms painted neutral ground, as a last minute double -check before I open the paint can and start painting my whole first floor that color! Your room looks lovely (and just like it does on my large paint sample I made up of the color- whew! Glad to see it doesn’t have some weird color fast I wasn’t anticipating, lol)
I tried so many paint samples (painted on large poster board), and nothing hit the magic “sweet spot” between “too cool vs too warm” and “too dark vs too light” like “Neutral Ground”. It is very aptly named! It seems to go with every color and wood tone in my house so well. My kitchen cabinets are similar to your piano’s wood tone- your piano looks so pretty against the wall color!!
I would have never thought of using Neutral ground, but we had a home stager come through to do a consult ( we thought we might be moving soon) and she suggested the color for our bedrooms ( She had suggested Madison Blanche for the first floor , but it was picking up a pinkish cast next to my warm finishes I. The kitchen when I tried a sample!) I think the lighter colors , like Neutral Ground are more on trend anyway. Thanks for sharing. I will have to look at your newer lists now and see how your home has evolved!

Oops – I should have double- checked better before I submitted that last comment! That should read “…finishes IN my kitchen…” and “…your newer POSTS…”
Thanks again!

Hi,
I was wondering what color white you used for the ceiling.
Thanks,
Laura

Sherwin Williams ceiling white paint. I just went in and got it straight from the rack pre-mixed.
